The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 2002 and initially started with the UG courses Computer Applications in the year 2002. The courses B.Sc Computer Technology,M.Sc Information Technology,M.Sc Computer Science and M.Sc Computer Technology was started in the year 2009. The aim of the department is to inspire a lifelong passion for learning, and to empower a diverse population of students to succeed as citizens of a challenging world.
The Department is committed in providing an array of academic and student development services that support student’s success in attaining their academic, cultural, and civic achievements, through teaching, research, creative activity, and service. The department has committed to produce best quality graduates by imparting quality teaching through resources build on teaching environment.
The Department follows the syllabus of bharathiar university in order to meet the growing demands and the changing trends of the software industry.The Department encourages the students to face the challenges in this competitive world. Our department mainly focuses on enlightening the student by updating them with latest IT trend through our TECHWIZ association, seminars and workshops are organized regularly to help the students to update their knowledge on latest developments.
Our Department prepares our students for lifelong personal and professional development which enable them to exercise the leadership and make everlasting contributions in their disciplines. The department provides the educational resources to keep pace with developments in the field. It magnifies positive impact in serving regional, state, national, and global needs by building mutually beneficial linkages with industry, institutions, community and constituencies which aims to create professionals accomplished with successful academic enrichments. Students who practiced their learning in a hands-on environment are most likely to have a greater retention of the program material.

Mr. S. Dhanaraj presently Heads UG & PG Department of Computer Science and Computer Applications in SMS College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu.
Prof S.Dhanaraj has M.C.A degree from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappali and M.Phil (Computer Science) from Madurai Kamaraj University, After his studies, he started his career as Head- Technical in a reputed Software Solution Integrated firm. Thereafter he slipped into academia by his sheer passion to Teaching. He is a Microsoft, Google & IBM Certified Professional.
He completed a short course on “Digital Forensics” with Distinction from Charles Sturt University, Australia and “Cyber Security for industrial control systems” from Department of Homeland Security, Unites States of America. He has 15 years of Teaching Experience and 4 years of Industry Experience in the field of Computer Science. He has presented and published 12 research papers in international and national Conferences. He has published 8 research papers in UGC-CARE and Scopus Indexed Journals.
He has also attended many National and International workshops and participated in various Faculty Development Programmes (FDP) organised by Greater Chennai Police, IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay & IIT- Roorkee.
He has completed a Minor Research Project titled “A study on Image Compression Vs Image quality: Finding the Best Trade off” Funded by University Grants Commission (UGC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
He Proposed and organised 9 Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp Funded by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India under NIMAT Project
He has also anchored a panel discussion on “Awareness on Cyber and Digital forensic” in FM Rainbow, All India Radio (AIR), Coimbatore. He gave a talk on “Recent trends in cyber security“in All India Radio(AIR),Chennai .
He was awarded “Smart administrator for Google Apps” by Google on 2015.
He is an author of “பாதுகாப்பான ஸ்மார்ட்போன் பயன்பாடு மற்றும் வழிகாட்டுதல்கள்” eBook available on Amazon.in.
He Published a patent on “Dynamic Policy Based Behavioural IoT Security Enforcement System Using Computer Environment” under Intellectual Property Rights, Government of India.
He regularly interacting with young students across India and creating awareness about Digital Safety, cyber security and effective use mobile phone.

The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 2002, initially started with the courses B.Sc Computer Science, BCA ,the post graduate course M.Sc computer science was started in the year 2020 and then B.Sc IT course was started in the year 2007, the Post Graduate course M.Sc Information Technology is started in the year 2009 with the passion to be inspired by learning and empowering the minds of diverse population of students to be success in this competitive world. The Department is committed to provide its broad services in academic and student development by which the student can achieve their goals in academic, cultural and civic domains. The department is committed towards imparting quality education through quality resources.
Since 2002, the course B.Sc Computer science is started, which focus on design, development and implementation of software and hardware. Also, the student can be able to get entry for their post graduate study in computer science and related domains. Candidates who acquired a degree in computer science can get the job role as software engineer, hardware engineer, programmer, data engineer, computer system analyst, mobile application developer, technical support and network engineer in private and also in government sectors.
The course BCA was also started in the year 2002, the course consists of wide range of subjects which develops the student skills in theoretical and practical aspects of computers right from the basic digital electronics to the highly advanced techniques of AI (Artificial Intelligence). Acquiring a degree in BCA, there are lot of jobs awaiting for them such as Web developer, Web designer, Network Administrator, System Manager, Computer Programmer, Software Developer, Software Tester, etc in IT organisations and government sectors, which depends upon the skill set they acquire during their BCA course.
In 2007, the courses B.Sc Information Technology and M.Sc Information technology were started. This course mainly focuses on database, network, software, designing, management and implementation of technology for designing and management. On learning these courses, the students can empower their skills in scientific theories and methods. More jobs are awaiting for B.Sc IT and M.Sc IT students in private and government sectors which includes Application Programmer, Information technologist, Computer Information Specialist, Database Administrator, Graphic Designer, Hardware & Network Expert and Information Architect.
In 2009, the courses B.Sc Computer Technology and M.Sc Computer Technology, both the courses were started, which aims to develop the students skill sets on modern computerized systems and also it focuses on design of hardware and software. There are more golden job opportunities available in private and government sectors for these courses which includes Android, Java, Python and Dot Net developers, Graphics designer and project manager.
In order to empower the faculty members and students skill set during the Corona lock-down period, the Department of computer science signed an MOU with ICTACADEMY and IIT –Mumbai for various online certification courses, which is to be done by the faculty members and students. As a part of our department association activity, the department of computer science organizes webinars periodically on world literacy Day, current trends in IT, Recent Trends in Software development Methodologies etc.
