Introduction

The Department of Costume Design and Fashion provides an excellent contemporary Fashion education and was started in the year 2007,the Department offers undergraduate degree programmes aligned with our faculty interdisciplinary knowledge and expertise.

The Costume Design and Fashion course trains the students to qualify with the skills required to meet the growing demand in the textile industry. We provide our students with an enriching array of educational experiences, including hands on training and empower students to improve their livelihood economically and socially. The course has been designed to focus on Textile fibre, Yarn, Fabric, Quality control and Testing, the various skills imparted to the students are Designing, Sketching, Dyeing, Printing, Portfolio Presentation, Garment Construction and Surface Embellishment like Aari, Embroidery and sequence works. Advances in the field including Marketing, Merchandising, and Entrepreneurship development are given. The course also enables the graduate to gain expertise in Advance Technology of Computer Aided Designing /CAD.

The Costume Design and Fashion has Industrial and Academic Collaborations and this has positioned the Department as the highest stride of progressive changes and innovations. As a part of curriculum Industrial visits to Production Units, Special Lectures, Industrial Internships, Trade Fairs, Workshops, Hand on Training, Fashion snoops etc., are organised by the Department. The students are of CDF at SMSCAS mostly employed as Fashion and celebrity Designers, Entrepreneurs, Boutique Heads, Fashion Illustrators and Designers, Jewellery Designers, Quality control Managers and Supervisors, Pattern makers, Buying officer, Store in-charge for International fashion brands, Visual merchandisers, Colour Matching Advisor etc.,  

The Faculty members in the Department of Costume Design and Fashion are actively engaged in motivating and kindling the knowledge of the students to bring their dreams into reality.

To create globally-competitive and socially responsible graduates for the Textile and Garment Industry through a strong emphasis on integrated education, innovative hands-on training, upgraded skills and Industrial Linkages.

MISSION

  • To enlighten the students about the latest technology in Apparel and Textile Industries through value-based education, innovative practices and multi-disciplinary approach.
  • To develop the entrepreneurial skills among the students for entrepreneurial ventures by providing infra-structure, human resource and consultancy.

 

HOD PROFILE

Miss G Manopraba is currently working in SMS College of Arts and Science, Perur Coimbatore as a professor and Head of the Department of Costume Design and Fashion. she received M.Sc. Degree from PSG College of arts and Science Coimbatore with a distinction for her academic excellence, Diploma in Beauty therapist from Kalaimagal Academy Karur, Diploma in Advance Body Spa from Blume Beauty Academy, Chennai. 

She has completed a certificate course in Apparel Merchandizing & Marketing Management by MSME Development institution Chennai-Government of India.

She has done a Research project on Eco-Friendly Mosquito Repellent Finish & Anti- Bacterial Finish on cotton Fabric and also has done a Research on Costume and Hair-do Accessories for CANCER Patients.  

She has seven years of Teaching Experience in the following Institutions Rathinam College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, as Head of the Department, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science, Perambalur as Head of the Department, MRC College of Arts and Science, Ariyalur as Assistant professor. 

She has a vast experience in Entrepreneurship. She has established GM Enterprises Private Ltd., under which she run’s Mitra Boutique for Bride, GM Garments for women’s wear and GM Industrial Training Centre for Entrepreneurial training for Rural people & GM Magalir poonthottam for Women’s Entrepreneurial Workshop in Ariyalur.

She has delivered expect lecture as a Resource Person in National & International Conferences, Guest lectures, workshops. Besides she has participated in various Seminars and Workshops.

She has received an award in TAKE WON DO Karata and has won a Gold Medal in State Level tournament in Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu. & she has won First place in Fashion show as a Best Ramp Model in NIFT – T Tirupur. 

She has an optimistic and unique style of teaching with perseverance and commitment towards student’s harmonious development and to their ever-growing educational necessities.

After the successful completion of B. Sc. Costume Design and Fashion program, the students are expected to

LIST OF ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES

  • The primary aim of FAS WING – The Costume Design and Fashion Association is to facilitate the students for innovation and technological upgradation with respect to Fashion design and Trend forecasting. To achieve this goal FASWING has in its treasure various activities and programs like FASHION SHOWS & DESIGNER CONTEST etc.

 

  • In today’s business world, it is imperative to enhance creative skills in Fashion. FAS WING adopts a varied innovative program for the enhancement of the student’s skills focusing mainly on fashionable improvement. Guest Lecture, Seminars, Workshop and intra / inter competitions, Poster presentation have been planned to create confidence among the students to express their thoughts precisely.

 

  • The Association feels extremely happy to announce FASWING will conduct a ‘Fashion week 2020’ for conducting competitions like Draping, Jewellery making, Face art, Fashion Illustration, Fashion sketching, and back stage events like Bridal makeup, Hair dressings, Nail art, Mehandi, Eye makeup etc., in which all the students will get opportunity to participate and to demonstrate their talents and potential.

 

  • To access different types of digital contents including books, articles, videos, audios, thesis and other educational materials applicable for students from varying educational levels FAS WING has instructed the students to register in National Digital Library of India (NDLI).

 

  • Through FAS WING we effectively conduct competitions and programs through FASWING, where students will be initiated to conduct more programs to practice their theatrical skill and inculcate the organizing skill. 

 

  • To conclude, FAS WING ensures to fulfil the visions and missions of the association. FAS WING will provide enjoyable and fruitful activities to the students and initiate them to participate in inter / intra collegiate competitions and presentations conducted by various reputed institutions and will initiate to organize industrial visits to various fields in Textile industry. 

 

  • Taking the cue, our ebullient students regularly participate in State and National Level contests and bring back accolades that add greatly to the reputation of the college.
