Introduction

The Department of English of SMS College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore is a sprouting department that would blossom with fragrance from the academic year 2021 – 2022. So far the Department rendered its service as a supporting department and was fully in the phase of developing the communicative skills of the students through General English teaching. Now, as the emergence of the hour promotes the aspirants of English Literature to secure good job settlement, the department has been extended into a major Department with qualified professors and a well-equipped language lab facility to create more successful English Literature graduates for the corporate world.

Mission

• Promoting Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) Skills of the students.
• Exposing the students to the imperatives of careers by training them in various fields including competitive examinations.

Introducing the theories of literature to the students, and helping them to acquire hands-on experience in creative writing and content writing to prompt the students as mass communication and media professionals

HOD Profile

Dr. G.M.A. Christy, the Head of the Department of English, SMS College of Arts and Science has opted to ensure that the Department achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities in assisting the students to reach the pinnacle of success. 

She has 8 years of research experience and has received her Doctoral Degree from the Bharathiar University in the year 2018. She has received her Master of Philosophy in the year 2002, Master of Arts in the year 2001 and Bachelor of Arts in the year 1999 from the Univeristy of Madras. 

Her area of specialization consists of Nineteenth Century British Literature and Theory and Cultural Studies. She has twelve years of teaching experience in several Self Financing colleges. She has published her Doctoral Thesis into a Book and has published five Research articles in the International Refereed UGC Sponsored Journals of English Language, Literature and Criticism. 

She is a recognised PhD research Supervisor of the Bharathiar University and eligible to supervise 4 candidates with the Qualification approval issued by the University. 

She has presented research papers in National and State Level Seminars and Conferences and has participated in literary workshops. She has arranged expert meets for students on a periodic basis to create an interest about English Language and   Literature. 

She was the member of Board of Studies of the Department of English at Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore – 49.  She has rendered her service as the NSS Programme Officer and also as the Fine Arts Coordinator at Bishop Ambrose College, Coimbatore. 

In SMS College of Arts and Science, she is the convener of the College Handbook Committee (CHC), Report Writing Committee (RWC). She is also a member in several other committees of the College.

The BA English Language and Literature – A Program Insight: Introduction

The BA English Language and Literature is an undergraduate degree program. The students of BA English Language and Literature will focus primarily on English proficiency by learning in detail how the language is structured and will become familiar with almost all the literary works and Genres. It provides career opportunities ranging from editor to academic and legal advisor to manager. The media industry comprises smaller industries and its domain extends into film industry, television, newspaper, news blogs, advertising, and even reviews on games, which pave the way to an English literature aspirant to become a professional in such fields or to produce, write, edit, create and review things all by himself.

Duration of the course:

• Duration of the BA English Literature program is three years and has Semester wise Examination Category.

Eligibility Criteria

• Pass in 10+2 with minimum 50% marks or equivalent.
• Candidates should have passed class 10+2 with minimum 50% marks from any recognized education board.
• Candidates should be at least 17 years of age at the time of admission and the upper age limit is 25 years.
