Introduction

The Department of Social Work was started in the year 2008 with the motive to serve people with humanitarian and ethical values. It offers Master of Social Work (MSW), a two year post graduate program with specializations of Human Resource Management (HRM), Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW) and Community Development (CD). 

  • To equip Human Resource Management students with generalist knowledge, values, and skills and to prepare competent professionals for effective functioning with diverse systems within a global context.
  • To Prepare Medical and Psychiatric Social Work students in assessment, intervention, therapeutic support through clinical exposures.
  • To develop and make Community Development students in understanding of working with people of diversity; including age, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation without discrimination. Future implications of the social welfare system with regard to the local and global continuum.

Social Work as a profession is extremely rewarding as it equips individuals, families, groups, and communities. The ultimate goal is to assist the nearby Perur village and its surrounding area.

The Department is about to start a PhD programme in the academic year 2021-2022 which will further develop the knowledge on social work practices. The Department works on providing advanced knowledge on social work and to provide quality of learning.

To excel in the field of social work and be competent to the National and International level social work professionals for the welfare of the society.     

Mission

  1. To provide a learning environment for students emerging theory and practical knowledge this helps social work professionals in character formation and responsibility for the society.  
  2. Building a dynamic, interdisciplinary and critical learning atmosphere by developing competent Social Work Professionals.
  3. Working towards being a unique space for Social Work education in a rural setting with innovative and updated teaching tools and techniques for efficient knowledge delivery.We work towards promoting the profession of social work by educating students to become catalysts for social change. the students are being prepared to be highly competent professionals who are skilled at providing effective service, integrating interdisciplinary knowledge, theory, and social work values with practice to address social needs.

HOD Profile

  • The Department of Social Work, SMS College of Arts and Science is currently headed by Dr. D. Kokila, who is an experienced HR in industrial setting. 
  • She has obtained her Under-graduation from Dr. G. R. Dhamodharan College of Science, Coimbatore and Post-graduation from P. S. G. College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore and Ph.D in Social Work (HR) from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
  • She has qualified in National Eligibility Test for Assistant Professor in January 2017.  
  • Her area of specialization includes Personnel Management, Industrial Relations, HRD and Labour Welfare.
  • She has published 4 research papers in various International Journals and Conferences. 
  • She has held various responsibilities of the College like Convener of Centre for Community Development, Convener of Centre for Counseling and Guidance, Member of Centre for Faculty Development, Report Writing Committee etc….
  • She has membership in professional bodies like NIPM, Social Work Forum (PSGCAS).
  • Her working experience includes Junior Executive HR cum Counselor in Aakaash Medical and Research Foundation, Coimbatore, from August 2002 to till September 2003, as a  Executive HR in Victus Dyeings, Tirupur, from October 2003 to March 2005, as a Labour Welfare Officer in Dimexon Diamonds Limited, Coimbatore from April 2005 to February 2009, as a Guest Faculty for PGDHRM course in PSG Arts and Science College, Coimbatore,  as a HR freelancer provided needful services to different organizations.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The M.S.W program describe accomplishments that graduates are expected to attain within five to seven years after graduation
PEO1Students can get Employment opportunity directly related to Social work and in its specialization area in government and in private sectors
PEO2After the completion of the course student may start an NGO or work as an entrepreneur
PEO3Students can became a social worker, school counsellor, programme organiser, project coordinators to upbringing the marginalized community
PEO4To introduce the students for advance knowledge in the field of social work.
PEO5To help students develop the skills needed in conducting a research in their specialization.
PEO6To equip the students with innovative and effective skills in the field of social work to face new emerging challenges.
PEO7To enable the students to acquire knowledge about how to write a project proposal which will help them to take projects from state and central government
PEO8Equipped with knowledge and skills of social work to advocate the injustice happen in the society
PEO10Wide spectrum of social work experience will equip them to work for social development were ever they are planted

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

After the successful completion of M.S.W program, the students are expected to
PSO1Develop an in-depth understanding of the Social Work profession, process through course work
PSO2Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of skills in all areas including Personnel management and industrial relations, Medical and psychiatric social work, community organisation, Family and Child Welfare,
PSO3Become proficient in a specific area of specialization.
PSO4To expose students to analyse the problem and also enable them to frame a new policy, programme or procedure to solve the problem
PSO5Adapt new innovative skills and strategies to solve the individual problem at local community level and at national level
PSO6Develop a systematic, critical approach to problem solving at all levels of the social work interventions.
PSO7Professional skills and abilities will enlarge their potential to face future challenges in their life and carrier
PSO8Help them to increase their professional perception in achieving the task of given project for a cause of social development
PSO9Students will be motivated to design a module for the social development
PSO10Students can excel in their profession at national and international level

PO9Identify research problems, obtain relevant data, interpret, and report findings
PO10They will be able to play a role of activist to bring solution for any injustice in the society.
